Lourenco tells Goa CM to ban plastic used for packaging food

Panaji: Highlighting the growing plastic menace, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco urged the state government to ban the use of plastic for packaged food and drinks. Lourenco has written to chief minister Pramod Sawant with the recommendation that manufacturing companies, particularly dairy companies, replace plastic with glass and also incentivise consumers to return glass bottles.

In his letter, Lourenco spoke about the bane of littering of plastic and beer bottles in Goa. He said that companies that manufacture cold drinks, juices, and milk should shift to glass bottles.

Lourenco said that it is important for the government to ensure that beverage manufacturers, particularly beer brewing firms, take their glass bottles and cans.

“Plastic waste is harming the environment by killing land animals, fish and other creatures in water bodies. The dangerous micro plastics is leading to many health problems including prostate or breast cancer, infertility and diabetes,” said Lourenco.
