GOA PANJIM: Plastic waste, including hundreds of pet bottles, has clogged drains near Azad Maidan, Panjim.
The civic body has commenced pre-monsoon work in full swing. While desilting drains, the workers are finding that hundreds of water bottles and other plastic trash have choked the drains. They were seen removing the water bottles from the drains on Monday morning.
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate, who personally inspected the ongoing pre-monsoon works, appealed to the citizens to refrain from littering and to throw the waste in the dustbins at designated places across the city.
“We have plenty of dustbins around the city, and a door-to-door garbage collection system is in place. If anyone has any issues, please bring them to our attention, but don’t throw waste on the streets. Plastic is choking all the city's drains. I request people to dispose of plastic and other waste properly,” Monserrate said.
He informed me that the City Corporation is now taking up the Portuguese-era drains that had not been desilted for over a decade. The Mayor expressed hope that the CCP will complete the ongoing pre-monsoon work before the monsoon onset.
“We have required manpower now. Contractors executing the Smart City works have also provided their labourers, and everything is going well. We hope to complete the work by mid-May or at least before the onset of monsoon,” the Mayor said.
