Udhagamandalam: Revenue department officials on Saturday sealed two shops and two godowns at Dolphin’s Nose, a popular tourist spot in Coonoor, for selling and stocking banned plastic products.
A team led by Coonoor tahsildar Sivakumar searched the shops and found packaged water bottles and soda bottles in two underground godowns. “We also found two shops selling banned packaged water bottles and soda bottles. As many as 600 bottles of water were seized. We imposed a penalty of 26,300 on the shopkeepers,” said Sivakumar.
Nineteen plastic items, including packaged water bottles and pet bottles, are banned in the Nilgiris. The officials warned the shopkeepers of strict action if they flout the ban.
Meanwhile, environmentalists demanded strict enforcement of law to prevent sale of banned plastic products. “Rigorous checking should be carried out at all check posts leading to the Nilgiris, through which the packaged water bottles reach the hills,” said an activist.
